Squatch Falls at Vic and Vi's Bay

Vic and Vi's Bay — named for our grandparents — is the swimming cove on our fishing lake: a sandy beach, a sunning area with chairs, and a stone-edged pool built right into the shoreline. Squatch Falls is the waterfall that feeds it — a man-made, recirculating falls you can wade straight into while the water moves around you. It's not a natural spring; we built it. But on a hot Tennessee afternoon, it does the job just as well.

A brand-new playground

Right near the trailhead, our new playground has double slides, a climbing tower with a tunnel, and a swing set, all set on soft safety turf under the pines. A good spot to burn off energy before or after a hike — or while the grown-ups get the campfire going.

On-site dog park

Our fenced dog park sits right in the woods, with a gate at the trailhead and a shaded path for your dog to stretch their legs off-leash. Please pick up after your pup and keep the gate latched behind you.

Chase our waterfalls

Big Bad Ass Bernard Falls is the farthest trek on the property — about 1.8 miles in, tumbling over a mossy bluff in a multi-tier cascade guests love hiking to. Closer to the trailhead, a cluster of three falls sit within a few minutes of each other around the 1-mile mark: Chickie's Creek Falls tucked into its own rock amphitheater, Roberts Rapids (just follow your ears), and Williams Waterfall, which runs dry by late summer.

150 years of iron & cornbread

The town at the bottom of the mountain

South Pittsburg was laid out in 1873 as a planned industrial town on the Tennessee River, modeled after its Pennsylvania namesake and built on the coal and iron of the Sequatchie Valley. In 1896, Joseph Lodge — a machinist who'd come to town to run the local blast furnaces — started his own cast-iron foundry down the street. That same family-run foundry still pours the skillets sold at the Lodge Cast Iron factory store and museum in town, and every last weekend of April, South Pittsburg throws the National Cornbread Festival in its honor.

A Civil War crossroads

Long before the town existed, the river ford near here — the old Creek Crossing at the south end of Long Island — was a hub for Native American trade routes and, later, for Union and Confederate troops maneuvering through the Sequatchie Valley during the fight for Chattanooga. Fortifications built to guard the river crossing and rail line changed hands more than once during the war, and nearby Nickajack Cave was mined by Confederate forces for the saltpeter used in gunpowder production.

October on the mountain

Spooky season nearby

If you're visiting in the fall, South Pittsburg leans into the season. The Old South Pittsburg Hospital, a shuttered hospital right in town on Holly Ave, is one of Tennessee's best-known paranormal hotspots — the Old South Pittsburg Paranormal Research Center runs day tours and overnight ghost hunts through it by advance booking. Marion County's Hale's Bar Dam has also hosted a seasonal haunted house in past Octobers. Either way, it's a fittingly eerie complement to a quiet night around our own campfire.
